LEARN TO ROW

If you have never rowed before or having been rowing for less than a year, you may be looking to join one of our Novice Men's and Women's squads. No prior experience is necessary and it is a great way to get involved in a sport at university level and join the sport!

THE START OF SOMETHING NEW

Both our novice squads run taster sessions at the start of the academic year, these are a great opportunity for new members to have a go and see if they'd like to join our club. If you are unable to attend these taster sessions or join later in the year, don't worry! We will always welcome new athletes to the club at any time during the academic year.

Our goal is to train new members up to a competitive level and compete at local and national events throughout the racing calander! Towards the end of the academic year, we start to integrate our novice athletes into the senior squads to join and learn ready for their first senior year in the following season.

The intensity of training builds up gradually over the first few weeks of the first term, building up fitness and strength, whilst integrating into university life
. This consists of a mix of water sessions, land training, and S&C workouts and culminates and the end of the first term with BUCS indoors and Bristol Head. Following on from this, novices will have the opportunity to compete in a wide range of competitions in both the head season and the regatta season.

The first half of the rowing race calendar mostly consists of head racing, the first our novice squads attend will be Bristol Head and then look to attend local events after Christmas such as Worcester and Gloucester Head alongside bigger events like Hammersmith, HORR and WEHORR.

The start of summer brings with it regatta racing, starting with the infamous Welsh Boat race and following on to BUCS regatta as a major university event. BUCS is a great opportunity to battle it out against the rest of the universities across the UK over a three day event.

Our novice program also includes training new members to take up coxing. If you are interested in giving coxing a go, more information can be found here.

If rowing sounds like the sport for you or if you have any questions about the club, we would love to hear from you via our contact page
